Deuteronomy 申命记 – Devotional Reading Plan 2020

11:18 “And you shall put these, my words, on your heart and on your inner self, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be as an emblem between your eyes.
11:18 你们要将我这话存在心内,留在意中,系在手上为记号,戴在额上为经文;
11:19 And you shall teach them to your children by talking about them when you sit in your house and when you travel on the road and when you lie down and when you get up.
11:19 也要教训你们的儿女,无论坐在家里,行在路上,躺下,起来,都要谈论;
11:20 And you shall write them on the doorframes of your house and on your gates, 11:20

14:2 For you are a people holy to Yahweh your God, and you Yahweh has chosen to be a treasured possession from among all of the peoples that are on the surface of the earth.

19:21 You must show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.”

This ordinance is the basis for the judge’s sentence, showing that all are equal before the law, that the punishment for sin is equal, and that the sentence must not be too severe or too light. An “eye for an eye” is not an indulgence in personal revenge, nor is it an encouragement to take revenge on one another when we deal with personal grudges (Mt. 5:38-39). The principle of human relations among God’s people is: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Lk. 6:31), “Judge not, and ye shall not be judged; condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned; forgive, and ye shall be forgiven” (Lk. 6:37).

20:19 “If you besiege a town for many days to make war against it in order to seize it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an ax against them, for you may eat from them, and so you must not cut them down. Are the trees of the field humans that they should come in siege against you?
20:20 Only the trees that you know are not fruit trees you may destroy and you may cut down, and you may build siege works against that city that is making war with you until it falls.”
  • Even if the siege is long overdue, the people should trust God not to cut down fruit trees for the siege by any means necessary. For the purpose of God’s warfare is to deal with Satan and “Satan’s servants,” not to destroy the ecosystem He created. God gave the fruit trees as a gift of grace at creation (Gen. 1:29), so the people were not to “spoil” (v. 19) what God had given them.
  • Spiritual warfare is God’s warfare on our behalf; therefore, not only should the motive be of God, the time should wait on God, and the method should be according to God. Today, as we “fight the good fight for the truth” (1Ti 6:12), let us remind ourselves that we are not to fight with human flesh and blood, “for the battle is won or lost by the Lord” (1Sa 17:47).

28:12 Yahweh shall open for you his rich storehouse, even the heavens, to give the rain for your land in its time and to bless all of the work of your hand, and you will lend to many nations; you will not borrow from them.
28:13 And Yahweh shall make you as head and not the tail, and you shall be only at the top of the nations, and you shall not be at the bottom, if you listen to the commandments of Yahweh your God that I am commanding you today and diligently observe them.

Many believers love the promise of “being the head and not the tail, but the top and not the bottom” (v.13), but often neglect the blessed way of “keeping the path of obedience, and not following the ways of other gods” (v.14). The promise to “be the first and not the last, but to be the first and not the last” is not only physical, but also spiritual. If we do not do what we are told, we will end up following the tide of the world, and we can only passively resist and “lie under the hand of the evil one” (John 15:19).

29:29 “The hidden things belong to Yahweh our God, but the revealed things belong to us to know and to our children forever, in order to do all the words of this law.”
